As a child, Jonathan accidentally built a 2-story treehouse surrounded by a thicket of poison ivy. Never deterred by a project’s audaciousness (or the limitations of his botanical knowledge), Jonathan’s designs conjure adventure and perceived risk—the stuff of childhood memories! Prior to studying architecture, Jonathan’s earlier career as a junior high school history teacher prepared him for what would be his quest: To awaken people’s senses and engage their innate curiosities. Jonathan has previously served as VP of Exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Denver. His choice to specialize in climbing structure design is born from a desire to make special places for families to share uncommon, joyous experiences.

Kyle is obsessed with designing complex three-dimensional labyrinths that challenge the mind and body. He uses cutting-edge parametric modeling software to sculpt weird, organic structures inspired by everything from a craggy mountainside to an osprey nest. Kyle sees the world as a complex, orderly whole, and his climber designs embody the harmony of natural and technological things. He is also a passionate educator who is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. In all his work, Kyle helps people cultivate a growth mindset and a heroic spirit through inquisitive play.

Our Story

Skyhouse Studio is a service of the Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus. The Museum created this entrepreneurial service in 2016 as a response to eager inquiries for design consultation.

Initially offering architectural and exhibit design services to other museums, we realized we have a special affinity for climbers. As we designed more of them for leading museums across the country, we developed a deep expertise in this specialized type of structure that lives at the intersection of art and play. Today, Skyhouse Studio specializes in designing weird, iconic climbing structures for a variety of venues around the world.
