THE WAVE

Children’s Museum of Tacoma / Greentrike

Tacoma, Washington, USA: 2021

The Wave Climber adds a challenging, big-body play element for older children. It rolls across the museum’s street front windows enticing bystanders to peek-in and join the action. It takes advantage of generous sunlight, encouraging the play of color and texture. Whimsical elements hide throughout like a communications tube to send messages to a nearby ship, looking glasses that peer into strange worlds, and mysterious hieroglyphics. It maximizes available space with three layers of activity: a layer of space at ground-level for quiet conversations and reading, and two layers above for higher-energy climbing fun.
